Grafana Tempo is our lightning-fast, highly distributed tracing backend! 🚀

It is precision-engineered to ingest, store, and query massive amounts of trace data at incredible throughput without requiring a bloated, complex index. This makes it the perfect tool for tracking requests jumping across our microservices!

🏗️ Architecture & Data Flow​

  • 📥 Ingestion: Tempo does not scrape or collect traces directly from your applications! Instead, it receives a perfectly clean, processed stream of trace data exclusively from our OpenTelemetry Collector.
  • 💾 Storage: We back Tempo entirely with S3 object storage. This lets us stash terabytes of trace data incredibly reliably and cost-effectively!
  • 📊 Visualization: Tempo has no UI of its own; it is natively integrated straight into Grafana! The second traces hit Tempo, you can instantly query, slice, and analyze them seamlessly within the Grafana interface.
